Smith Magazine, Six-Word Memoirs

Katherine Sarnie
Six-Word Memoirs

I found the article Six-Word Memoirs very interesting because it was different from all the other articles I have read this semester in numerous ways. This article was about a online magazine that focuses on personal story telling and challenged writers to write a six-word story describing something that is going on in their life.

Some six-word memoirs that I found most powerful were "Just in; boyfriends gay. Merry Christmas" "Still trying to impress my dad" and "Thank God the suicide attempt failed". I found these short memoirs interesting because they were short and to the point. I liked reading them because they were different but in a good way. This article kept me intrigued and made me think of all the different ways for writers to get their points across. Writing does not have to be boring and bland and this article keeps the reader interested and shows different styles of writing.

Steven Johnson, Everything Bad is Good for You: Games

Blog: Steven Johnson, Everything Bad is Good for You: Games

While reading the article Everything Bad is Good for You: Games by Steven Johnson, I began to agree with the assumptions he was making about video games and pop culture being just as good for you as reading books. Steven Johnson talks about the "Sleeper Curve" which I found very interesting. He says that our generation's television shows and use of entertainment have deeper meanings in them, allowing these television shows to be just as healthy as reading a book. He states that it allows your mind to think about these deeper meanings, similar to reading a book. The "sleeper curve" is the "most debased forms of mass diversion-video games and violent television dramas and juvenile sitcoms-turn out to be nutritional after all" (Johnson 459). I agree with what Johnson in saying because I know for me, watching today's television shows makes me think about the meanings behind the plot and what the writers are actually trying to portray.

I also found it interesting when Johnson says that reading books is not as good for you as one may think. Johnson talks about how children read books quietly in corners are separated from their peers, being isolated because of the book. He then goes further and says how playing video games create a common culture for children and connects them through common interests. "The book readers of the younger generation are learning to "follow the plot" instead of learning to lead", I agree with this statement because while reading books you are only allowed to stay within the boundaries of the books plot, while playing video games gives the player imagination and adventure (Johnson 461).

Finally, Johnson talks about how playing video games helps hand eye coordination and uses the muscles in ones fingers. Reading books only exercises the mind, while playing video games exercises both the mind and hands. I do not think our generation is in trouble because of the use of technology because reading will always remain something of our culture. Reading is not going anywhere, therefore our generations use of technology and entertainment should not be something that is frowned upon.

Practice Observation

Practice Observation

For my practice observation I watched the women in a nail salon when I got my nails done this weekend. The first observation I made was that mostly all of the women were the same, they were all stereotypically suburban mothers. Mostly all of them had fake colored hair and drove big sized cars. I also thought it was interesting that mostly all of the women in the nail salon and had no problem gossiping about Walpole town drama.

A lot of the women talked about their children and which sports they participated in. Also many of the women had fake lone acrylic nails that they wanted to get "filled" and receive a French Manicure. I enjoyed observing the women in the nail salon because it was so interesting to listen to them and how they were so involved in the town and sports and all of them had to make sure that their appearance was perfect. I think the nail salon was a good place for my practice observation because there was a sense of community there, the women all knew each other, they all gossiped and shared the common interest of perfecting their appearance.

Jon Stewart, Commencement Address

Katherine Sarnie
Jon Stewart, Commencement Address

I enjoyed reading the article Jon Stewart, Commencement Address because I think we as college students can find a lot of insight from this article. After reading the article I began to wonder what is going to happen to a lot of college students after they graduate. Will the find a god job or be suffocated by debt and student loans? This article was really eye opening because it was blunt, Jon Stewart has no problem saying it how it is.

I found it most surprising that Jon Stewart states that when he went to college, he was nothing special. He states he was "less than five feet tall, yet my head was the same size it is now. Didn't really look like a head, it looked more like a container for a head". (Stewart 127). He then states how he lives in Hollywood as a star who goes to brunch with the cast of Friends. Jon Stewart basically says that we have the ability to be whoever we want to be. What we do in college does not define us, its who we are after college and what paths we decide to travel is what shapes us.

Jon Stewart's commencement address was convincing because it made me think about what will happen after college. I liked the way he basically said that we can be whoever we want to be and I agree with him when he says that college does not define us. I also agree with Jon Stewart when he states that we are all going to be OK in the end.

I decided to do my digital collage about my family and friends because they both mean a lot to me and have been there for as long as I can remember. On the top I included to quote "Family is like fudge; mostly sweet with a few nuts" because I think everyone can agree that every family is somewhat crazy but in a good way. I included pictures of my parents because they have helped me in countless ways and I would not be where I am today if it were not for them. I then included pictures of my sibling and my cousins because I am extremely close to my cousins that they are pretty much like my siblings and also my best friends. I then decided to include my friends in my digital collage because I also consider them my family. I would consider my girl friends not just my best friends but also my sisters. I used different shades of blue because blue has always been my favorite color but I tried to make sure it was a happy upbeat blue not a sad and gloomy blue. I decided to use the pink colors as the background to make the pictures stand out and to my my collage vibrant and happy. I do not know what my life would be like today if it were not for my family and friends. I am happy with the way I incorporated my friends in my collage to show that they are also my family.

Mrigaa Sethi, Facebook: Editing Myself

After reading the article Mrigaa Sethi, Facebook: Editing Myself I found it very interesting that people often do not realize how easy it is to alter our appearance on social medias. I know of countless people that only post pictures of themselves that they look their absolute best in. By doing so they are giving a false representation of what they really look like and who they really are. I found it very surprising that Mrigaa Sethi could get away with pulling off a false representation of herself because today you can pretty much find anyone you want to on the internet.

Also after reading this article it reminded me of the hit TV show "Catfish". In this show, people will fall in love with someone through the internet but the person they think they fell in love with are usually completely different from what they made themselves out to be. Nowadays it is so easy to create a fake profile that it surprises me that people think they can find love through the internet. Whether you want to admit it or not, we have all tried to make ourselves look good when posting things on social networks. I agree with Mrigaa Sethi when she argues that online profiles are highly edited and a bad representation of someones identity. I think that a lot of people find themselves changing who they are on social networks to escape the stresses of everyday. I think that people who do not do well in social situations, use the internet as a way to be social without actually having to face people.
